On December 4, 2008, 3TIER unveiled a 5 km resolution global wind map based upon the most accurate, consistent, and comprehensive dataset of wind resources ever created, including wind spatial and temporal variability. To produce the map and dataset, 3TIER implemented an innovative physical-statistical model, and ran the model through a 10-year simulation. A clickable version of the map, displaying average annual wind speed ranges across the globe was made available online in January 2009.

On October 13, 2008, 3TIER released the world’s first contiguous map of solar resources in the Western Hemisphere at a resolution roughly 3 times that of previous U.S. solar maps, and based on a 12-year time-series. The most important solar value, the annual average range for Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI), can be found at for locations in the Western Hemisphere.

On October 27, 2009, 3TIER expanded the geographical coverage of our existing solar dataset for the Western Hemisphere to include Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania. The near global dataset is the result of applying 3TIER’s established state-of-the-art satellite processing methods to over a decade of new visible satellite imagery. The final solar map and dataset includes the rapidly growing solar power markets of India, Australia, and Japan.

On February 23, 2010, 3TIER completed a major milestone in its REmapping the World initiative with the release of a global solar map and dataset at a resolution and spatial extent not available anywhere else. The map and dataset feature global coverage from 50° S and 60° N, a spatial resolution of 2 arc-minutes (approximately 3 km), and hourly values of GHI, DNI (Direct Normal Irradiance), and DIF (Diffuse Horizontal Irradiance) extending back 10 to 13 years. This dataset provides the in-depth solar irradiance data critical to global decision-makers and organizations for targeting the best regions for development around the world. It will be particularly important in areas where solar data is only of poor quality or is simply unavailable.

On March, 3 2010, 3TIER completed the final milestone of the REmapping the World initiative with the launch of the its global resource ranks for wind, solar, and hydro. The ranks are based on 3TIER's proprietary datasets, produced using the most advanced scientific techniques and atmospheric models. The result is a globally consistent rank for any given location relative to all other locations worldwide. This immediately places the potential of a site in a relative and actionable context and allows more reliable point-to-point comparisons as well as the comparison of multiple renewable resources for any location around the globe. This new interface serves as a guide for broad planning for large scale renewable energy development, smart grid integration, transmission line corridors, and infrastructure planning.
